HA1 - Task 3 – Graphic Types

Create an illustrated report that explores these five different types of computer game graphics:

·         Pixel Art
·         Concept Art
·         Texture Art
·         Background Graphics
·         Print Media Art

Illustrate as required and remember to cite any sources you have used in your research, both written and visual.

Pixel Art:

Pixel art is a retro form of digital art which is gaining a lot in popularity these days. Pixel art is generally thought of as a computer graphic where the image is literally drawn pixel-by-pixel in tiny detail, usually using a limited color palette and primitive computer graphics tools.

Mc Pixel is a game which adopted the pixel art style of graphics and proved that people still loved this art style as the game sky rocketed with sales. Every scene in this game is made completely from pixels which is clear to see. This art style is also known as "retro" which is now becoming more and more popular due to the nostalgia that it brings to the older community of gamers. I have personally not played this game but b looking at its reviews and YouTube videos about it, i can see that it was ell taken by the whole of the community. i feel that was because the pixel art style brought the older gamers back to the community but also kept the younger ones due to the gameplay that this game offers with its sense of humor and ridiculous possible outcomes.

Isometric Pixel Art:

It is a way to create a scene, an object or a character by following one very basic and simple rule…..start with two pixels across and one pixel up to build your picture. That is Isometric PixelArt in essence. To create an isometric view in PixelArt by using two pixels across by one pixel up will give you an angle of approximately 26.565 degrees.A true Isometric angle is 30 degrees but the pixels do not follow a neat line at this angle so that is why Isometric PixelArt has an angle of 26.565 degrees approx.

This is a game called Outpost Combat 2 which is a strategy defense game that embraces the isometric side of the pixel art style. This isometric pixel style gives a more realistic look compared to its counter part  which could attract more people due to the better graphics that it has. The game uses the isometric style extremely well so that every aspect looks 3D when it really isn't but when playing this game you wouldn't notice that because of how it is done.

Concept Art:

The main goal of concept art is to convey a visual representation of a design, idea, and/or mood for use in films, video games, animation, or comic books before it is put into the final product. In other words, it aims to convey the overall design vision rather than specify everything in exact terms right

at the start.

In this image we can see the concept art/process of the character Salvador from Borderlands 2. The "rough sketch" is the concept ideas for this character about what he could possibly look like which also determines what he acts like, how he sounds and what are the things he would say. This is why when you have a concept/idea you don't just go straight to the final idea because there are so many factors that affect the character or object you are going to create so you draw a few possible ideas of what you would want it to look like. By doing this you can see what other people think about different aspects of each design and only use the most favored ideas to take forward.

Texture Art:

Texture art is when a "texture"is created to give the player a sense of touching that specific material such as metal on a spaceship door, a wooden door or a soft fabric that the player may be wearing or may pick up. Texture art can also be when the textures for a player or an object have been created and will then be wrapped around the model which has been created (example on the left).

Texture, another element of art, is used to describe either the way a three-dimensional work actually feels when touched, or the visual"feel" of a two-dimensional work.

Background Graphics:

Background graphics are exactly what they sound like, It's when someone doesn't focus on the main characters or what's going on in the foreground but they create the surroundings which are most suitable. They create things such as building, mountains, pedestrians, player UI etc..although not as much appreciated as they deserve to be they are just as important nevertheless.

This game is Killzone 2 and shows just how jaw-dropping the background graphics can be. It has attractive bight colours, each marquee stall is different which shows creativity and also each pedestrian looks different which means they didn't reuse models such as other game franchises. Also the textures on the buildings and floor are done perfectly with with crumbling, cracked and derelict walls. The floor has some slightly raised tiles and fine grains of sand within each crack is all simply magnificent. In my opinion you would never feel the full gaming experience if you didn't have background graphics that were well developed as they set the mood/tome for any situation you're in.

Background graphics artists also deal with the players UI which in this case o f the game League Of Legends includes the score, the players health, enemy players health, mana, their spells and the map. Without all these elements being involved then the player wouldn't understand what was going on or who was winning. I feel that both the game play and the UI are extremely important and why this game has become the most watched E-sports game.

Print Media Art:

Print media art isn't what is on the screen, its what you can physically touch or have such as posters, game covers, boxes and also billboards. Print media art is extremely important when advertising your game because you want it to attract as many people as possible to your game or your bundle deal that you have with a specific console.

This is an example of print media art in the form of the front cover of the game Mariokart 8 which is very attractive, bright and welcoming. The first wonderful thing about this cover is that it contains the 4 main characters of almost every Mario game, there is Mario (of course), his partner in crime/brother Luigi, the love interest/princess Peach and the nemesis Bowser and the cover makes it clear that he is the bad guy as he is the only one with an item that could hurt another player. The second wonderful thing about this cover is that its almost a preview of the game as you can see different karts and wheels that each character has, also you can see that Mario's tires are not the correct way with Bowser being upside down shows that the game messes with gravity and finally the 8 in the title is also an item that you can get in the game.

This is another example of print media art in the form of a bundle deal between Xbox and Halo 4. This example is great because the whole box is dedicated to promoting what you get inside if you pay for this bundle deal. Firstly it shows that you will get a limited edition Halo Xbox which is designed around the game of Halo to look futuristic and also to look sci-fi as the game itself is a sci-fi FPS genre. Secondly it shows the pads which you will get and they are basically the same as the console in terms of being limited edition and based around the game it is advertising. Finally you see the actual game that the entire box is based around and advertising.

Another type of print media art can be in the form of physical objects that have been taken out of the game and created in real life to be sold on the market for fans and Minecraft is an excellent example as the creeper face is known world wide by millions and the diamond tools (shown in the left) are so simple in design but because they are related to Minecraft they are popular. This is why Microsoft bought Minecraft for such a high price as they aren't just buying the game but they are buying the whole band as well.
